Within any effective company culture, employees will find a sense of stability and room for growth with the organization supporting and developing its people. Whether you are an executive or a newly hired intern, you can expect the same level of care and respect from Hoosier Energy.
Take Blake Kleaving as an example. He began his career at Hoosier Energy as an intern in 2012 and is now the Manager of Member Solutions.
“I’ve seen how much the program has grown since then. It’s no longer just about doing the work—it’s about creating a path for young professionals to learn, explore and find where they belong,” Kleaving said.
Austin Dalton, a senior at Wabash College, is a second-year intern currently working under Kleaving in the Member Services department. Previously, he gained experience as a Communications intern under Chad Mertz.
“What I appreciate most about Hoosier Energy is the chance to explore different departments. It’s shown me that Hoosier wants its interns to grow by finding the right fit,” Dalton said.
He is one of many examples of Hoosier Energy promoting growth and exploration to help young professionals find their place in the company and the industry.
In today’s competitive job market, where employee turnover is common, retaining talented employees is becoming more difficult. Hoosier Energy has gone above and beyond in this area by not only retaining young talent but also developing and nurturing them into emerging leaders. This is exemplified by Hoosier Energy’s own Chief Operating Officer, Rob Horton, and Chief Administrative Officer, Chris Blunk, who both began their careers at the company as interns.
Having leadership and employees who have been developed and promoted within Hoosier Energy fosters a work environment with a rich understanding of the industry and brings a wealth of knowledge about the history and culture of the company.
In an ever-changing industry, this wisdom serves Hoosier Energy extremely well and is one of the many strengths that appeal to prospective employees.
“Watching employees develop into experts and leaders is one of the most satisfying aspects of my job,” Hoosier Energy President and CEO Donna Walker said. “Hoosier’s internship programs has produced several impactful professionals, both at Hoosier and throughout our entire industry. It’s a tradition we’re very proud to continue.”
As the organization moves through its 76th year of operation, the values Hoosier Energy was founded upon still hold true. There are countless stories demonstrating the hard work and perseverance of people who aspire to excel within the company, including interns. Future leaders will be set up to succeed, following in the footsteps of those who paved the way.
