As cooperatives, Hoosier Energy and its member systems are committed to the seven cooperative principles, including Concern for Community.
Electric cooperatives across the state of Indiana put that principle at the forefront for Community Day on October 10. More than 30 cooperatives took on approximately 50 local community projects, either on that day or at other times before and after October 10. That included Hoosier Energy member cooperatives, who took on or will take on the projects below.
Bartholomew County REMC held a food drive as part of Member Appreciation Day on October 28, then sorted and delivered the donations to local food banks.
On October 14, Clark County REMC held its service day at YMCA Camp Honor Bright in Sellersburg. Employees did cleaning, bench building, tree and trail clearing, and more.
Daviess-Martin County REMC will participate in November, preparing items for the Christmas Toy Drive in conjunction with Daviess County Partnership.

At Decatur County REMC, Community Day was spent at South Decatur Elementary School, where employees painted dugouts and the concession stand as well as staining bridges and benches in the outdoor lab.
Dubois REC got a headstart on Community Day in August, installing new banners throughout the town of Ireland.
In late September, Harrison REMC participated in the Repair Affair of Harrison County community event, making small repairs for disabled and low-income family homes.
Henry County REMC joined the Heart of Indiana United Way for its Day of Caring. Joining other community volunteers, Henry County helped string Christmas lights at the Arts Park, maintained by The Art Association of Henry County.
The Scott County Clearinghouse was the site of Jackson County REMC’s Community Day. Employees helped paint the outside of the food pantry as well as the curb stops. They also donated supplies to help stock the pantry in advance of a Halloween event.
RushShelby Energy partnered with Camp Woodsmoke to sand and paint railings, picnic tables and benches as well as refurbish a firewood holder. Townsend Tree Service joined in to help remove trees that posed a risk to camp structures.
In late September, South Central Indiana REMC celebrated Community Day at Peden Farms. They hosted live line safety demonstrations and assisted on wagon rides among other things during the Children’s Farm Festival.
Southeastern Indiana REMC spent Community Day assembling Co-op Care Kits for a trio of local organizations – Heart House, Safe Passage and Salvation Army – to distribute as needed.
The earliest jumpstart on Community Day belonged to Southern Indiana Power, which set poles and hung safety nets at Perry Central Schools back in June.

Whitewater Valley REMC spent Community Day at Cope Environmental Center, helping with trail cleanup for the center’s 5K event and assisting with registration setup to ensure everything was ready for race day.
YMCA Camp Carson in Princeton was the site for WIN Energy REMC employees to participate in Community Day. Tasks included painting three cabins, rebuilding a dock, cleaning the inside of an old cabin and removing an old fence.
