Get to Know Adam Roberts
Hoosier Energy’s Chief Financial Officer
EnergyLines March 2019
What are the top priorities you are focusing on?
As the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), I am the primary sponsor for two of Hoosier Energy’s eight strategic priorities: rates; and cost management/performance culture.
As part of these extremely important priorities, I will be focusing on increasing members’ understanding of Hoosier Energy’s wholesale rates and tariffs, while looking for potential opportunities to improve the current design to better align with today’s environment. I will also be focusing on continued cost management and ways to communicate key cost drivers to the employees and members.
What have you learned from your experience in the electric industry that applies to your position?
Since beginning my employment in 2012, I have worked in the finance division and have had the opportunity to work alongside Chief Executive Officer Donna Walker, on many projects.
Coming from a non-utility background, this was a great learning experience and helped me quickly gain an understanding regarding treasury management and how utilities are financed, as well as the importance of effective risk management.
What challenges do you see electric utilities facing in the next few years?
One of the biggest challenges ahead for the industry is emerging technologies and the impacts these technologies will have on the electric utility model. New and emerging technologies provide utilities the opportunity to interact more with end consumers to develop new and innovative ways to gain efficiencies and provide the needed services for the membership.
What do you find most exciting about working at a cooperative?
I continue to really enjoy the cooperative business model and benefits it provides to our 18 member systems. Since cooperatives belong to the communities we serve, there is a very clear mission to do what is in the best interest of the consumer-members.
What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?
My wife, Andrea, and I met when attending Indiana University (IU). We have two boys, Carter, 8, and Chase, 6. Our lives currently revolve around the boys and their sports, as they are involved in baseball, basketball and football.
We are avid IU fans and enjoy watching just about any event IU is involved in.
