Welcome to the Turtle Creek Reservoir

The 1,550-acre reservoir was constructed in 1980 to provide cooling water for Hoosier Energy's Merom Generating Station. Since that time, Turtle Creek has matured into one of the best fishing and waterfowl hunting recreational spots in Indiana.

Located at the reservoir is Hoosier Energy's Environmental Education Center. The center is an 1,100 square foot classroom/laboratory available to educators, scouting groups and others with an interest in science, energy or the environment.

For the fishing enthusiast, Turtle Creek Reservoir has been stocked with bluegill, redear sunfish, black crappie, largemouth bass and channel catfish. All sporting activities are subject to Hoosier Energy rules and regulations and Indiana State Fish and Wildlife laws. 
 

2008 / 2009 Waterfowl Hunting Dates

Turtle Creek Reservoir will be closed to fishing during periods of the waterfowl hunting season, which will coincide with dates set by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The fall and winter hunting schedule has been established for the 1,500-acre reservoir in Sullivan County owned by Hoosier Energy. Preference for hunting sites will be given to parties of two and three with remaining blinds available for individual hunters.

Hunting is scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from one-half before sunrise until noon.

Early Season
    October 25, 26, 28, 30
    November 1 and 2

Duck and goose hunting is permitted on all dates.

Selection for hunting locations will be held at 6 a.m. each day. After site selection, hunting is allowed until noon when the reservoir will reopen for fishing.

The reservoir will reopen for daylight fishing (sunrise to sunset) from November 3 to November 26.

On November 27, the reservoir will close for fishing until January 30, 2009.

From January 19 to January 29, goose hunting will be allowed all day on the south end of the reservoir. Selection for hunting locations will be at 6:30 a.m. Daylight fishing will resume during this period but is restricted to the north end of the reservoir. All fishing enthusiasts must be off the lake at sunset.

The entire lake will be open for fishing the morning of January 30.

Hunters and fishermen are required to be properly licensed and have all appropriate stamps. A Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program (HIP) number and state approved shot are required. Boats must be licensed and cannot use motors larger than 10 horsepower.

User fees for Turtle Creek Reservoir are $1 daily for those 16 and younger and 65 and older. All others pay $3. Hunting and fishing will not be allowed when the boat ramp is ice covered. Winds exceeding 30 miles per hour will cause all lake activities to be cancelled.

Turtle Creek Reservoir is owned and managed by Hoosier Energy as a source of cooling water for the Merom Generating Station. The reservoir and other facilities offer recreational and educational opportunities.
