Proposals to reduce mercury emissions from power plants have been in the news frequently, and the debate is often highly emotional about how to reduce those emissions, how quickly those reductions can be achieved, and at what cost.

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) has developed a frequently-asked-questions (FAQ) document with valuable basic information about mercury, its sources, its impacts, and the ability of electric cooperatives to reduce emissions from power plants.

Mercury is a naturally-occurring element that is found in coal as well as many other sources.
